South of Mexico City, amidst the canals of Xochimilco, floats a small island with a truly disturbing landscape: Isla de las Muñecas. Hundreds of decaying, mutilated dolls—some missing limbs, others with vacant, staring eyes—hang from trees and festoon dilapidated shacks.
