4. Poveglia Island, Italy: Venice's Isle of Madness and Plague

A short boat ride from the beauty of Venice lies Poveglia, an island with a nightmarish past. It served as a quarantine station for plague victims during the Bubonic Plague, where thousands are said to have been burned on giant pyres. Later, in the early 20th century, a mental hospital was established here, complete with legends of a cruel doctor performing torturous experiments before allegedly succumbing to madness himself. Now completely abandoned, its decaying hospital buildings and mass grave sites contribute to its reputation as one of the most haunted places in Italy, strictly off-limits to casual visitors.
