Basel is an exceptional small town located in northwestern Switzerland close to the border along the Rhine river. Customs here die hard, as the annual Fasnacht, the most important festival of the year, takes place heralding stories, events, and heritage activities. Perhaps the most notable is the Morgestraich, which is an occasion beginning at 4:00 AM and requires a complete town blackout as citizens walk the streets in unity. However, for the remainder of the year, sightseers are encouraged to visit the red sandstone Marktplatz to purchase local goods and services. Often overlooked as a travel destination, Basel is deemed a green city, with plenty of gardens and parks to enjoy, as well as over forty museums (the largest density in the country). Many would love the atmosphere and variety this Switzerland gem has to offer.
