Perhaps one of the ugliest insects is the Arachnocampa Luminosa, which in the larvae stage resemble a long maggot like creature. Their one redeeming quality is that they produce light to attract smaller insects and also as a way to rid their systems of waste. When collected inside the dark caves, millions of these glowworms give off an intimate and fascinating lime green light. Thousands of these critters amalgamate to create an experience that is heralded as one of the most enriching opportunities for both tourists and locals to marvel at the natural beauty New Zealand has to offer. These worms are available for the site via tour guides that allow visitors to view the phenomenon first hand in a universe-like atmosphere.
